To protect the foreshores and coastlines of Brunswick Heads and surrounds from damage/overuse, over-development, exploitation and theft. We will protect, advertise, nurture and promulgate the 'Simple Pleasures' theme and spirit of this township and vigorously defend her from greed, environmental vandalism and abuse.
We are active, intelligent, informed and stubborn and have the majority of the townsfolk and countless visitors behind us.
We have worked hard over the last 12 months and have succeeded in declaring Brunswick Heads NSW (formally through council), Brunswick Heads and Environs CSG FREE!!
We will be posting and hosting events that hopefully you will support and propagate.
CONGRATULATIONS to all those who worked, walked, cooked, spoke, administered, filed, logged and cooked.
Together we achieved what was a daunting task! Congratulations to 'The Team'.
DON'T THINK IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE!!!
Byron Bird Buddies (BBB) is a volunteer community group, involved with avifauna monitoring, conservation and education in the Northern Rivers of NSW, Australia, since 2004. The group operates under the auspices of Brunswick Valley Landcare as an avian locality group. BBB conservation and monitoring activities are generally focused in Byron Shire with some education activities extending to surrounding shires of the Northern Rivers and Clarence Valley.
We are a peaceful group of women who like to sit and knit and have a chat, but more importantly protect our community from the invasive gas mining industry
SIMO, The Stradbroke Island Management Organisation Inc was formed in 1978 from a grassroots community campaign to stop a proposed bridge from the mainland. Since that time, we have been active in fighting to maintain the island’s natural environment and low-key coastal village character.
Our members share the commitment to ensure the environmentally sustainable management of the island’s flora and fauna as well as its natural resources such as minerals and water. We work alongside many other local, state and national organisations to achieve this.
We acknowledge and thank the Traditional Custodians of this area – The Quandamooka People.
Our mission is to restore and care for our critically endangered rainforest. Founded in 1992, we are one of the largest and most successful Landcare groups in the country.
We are the voice of the rainforest. We talk to and work with governments, business, private landholders, community organisations and the community generally on our unique lowland subtropical rainforest, it’s magnificent biodiversity, its restoration and ongoing care.
The Big Scrub was the largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia covering an area of approximately 75,000 hectares on rich volcanic and alluvial soils between Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore.
Tragically it was cleared for agriculture and by 1900 only one percent remained in the form of 100 small remnants scattered across a largely cleared landscape.
MCAN was formed in response to the potential hijacking of our local economy by the globalised Woolworths entering our small town. Our community was unable to stop them - however they afforded us a brilliant opportunity to become more aware of LOCALISATION, strengthening our economy sustainably, building solidarity and community resilience from the bottom up.
Now, the fear of the Northern Rivers becoming an industrialised gasfield is far worse than becoming a clone town. Petroleum Energy Licence PEL445 (Arrow Energy) covers Byron Shire and beyond. MCAN is supporting the LOCK THE GATE movement, which is not aligned with any political party. It is a grassroots community alliance gathering strength to become the biggest social movement in Australia.
Gasfield Free Byron Shire Action Group is an informal community based group fighting invasive gas mining and fracking locally around Northern Rivers, in NSW, and across Australia.
Gasfield Free Byron Shire Action Group has developed from the community group that co-ordinated the survey of Byron Shire townships and villages. That almost-completed process revealed a 97.8% average approval for maintaining Byron Shire in a gasfield-free conditon! The Action Group operates independently, under the general policies and aims of Lock the Gate and Gasfield Free Northern Rivers, to provide information to the Byron Shire community and promote relevant local action and events. The group is also widening its focus to support regional and national fossil-free initiatives, with initiatives like the support-raiser for the blockade at Maules Creek in the Leard State Forest, in January ‘14. The Gasfield Free Byron Shire Action Group is non-hierarchical, informal and consensus-based.
“It’s time to stop letting corporate power make the most important decisions our planet faces. We don’t have the money to compete with those corporations, but we do have our bodies…. in this case we are the conservatives, and… our foes – who would change the composition of the atmosphere – are the dangerous radicals.” Bill McKibben, 350.org

Tweed Landcare supports people caring for the environment and natural resources of the Tweed. We provide information, training, project coordination, advocacy and representation for our members, locality groups, landholders and community.
The Tweed Valley has an incredibly rich flora and fauna, with more species of fish, birds, amphibians and mammals than Kakadu. The region has many threatened fauna species, and Australia's highest concentration of threatened plants.
Committed volunteers and landowners in the local Landcare network are working to protect and rehabilitate this precious landscape. TLI was formed as an incorporated group in 1997 to promote Landcare in the Tweed Valley.
There are a number of on-ground projects with which TLI is working throughout the Tweed Valley, either as a sponsor organisation for individuals and groups, a project partner or as the applicant. If you would like to become involved with any of these let us know.
Sponsorship of Grant Applications
We have sponsored grant applications for many groups and individuals. If you need a sponsor organisation or help with your grant application come along to the monthly meeting or contact the Landcare Coordinator or Project Officer.
Information and Education
We hold Landcare displays at community events, workshops and field days, contribute articles to local media and promote awareness of biodiversity.
Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 5.30pm at the Panorama Room (upstairs Courthouse Hotel, Murwillumbah). These are an opportunity to keep up to date with TLI activities, hear interesting guest speakers and share your views. Please feel welcome to attend.
Stop CSG Fracking Gold Coast: for an immediate moratorium on CSG mining.
There are different types of CSG mining. They all involve extracting water from coal seams to de-pressurise them and release gas. They all result in untreatable 'produced water', lower the fresh water table and are a fire hazard. The most well known - and unpopular - method is hydraulic fracturing (or fracking). It involves blasting a mixture of water, sand and toxic chemicals deep into the ground to crack the bedrock and release coal seam gas. Toxic chemicals have already been found in fracked wells in Queensland, and wells closed due to water contamination.
There are much cleaner and safer technologies available right now. But the short-term profits of mining companies are being prioritised ahead of our air, water, soil and health. Stop CSG Fracking Gold Coast will be campaigning locally for:
- A Royal Commission into all impacts of CSG mining;
- A moratorium on CSG mining until the outcome of the Royal Commission; and
- A ban on fracking
