Description

Green Cross Australia empowers a resilient Australia. We educate and empower people and businesses to become more resilient to our changing climate and environmental stresses. Together with our partners, we run innovative, digital projects, which help to grow more sustainable communities. We are helping our cities and coasts to prosper by advancing food security, property resilience, and urban landscapes.

Our mantra, Think + Act + Share = Change, is key to every project we deliver. The power of these projects is motivating Australians to take practical, informed action. So we don’t just focus on awareness, we encourage people to take action, and then give them the tools via social and digital media to share their actions with their friends.

Green Cross Australia educates and empowers Australians to become more resilient to our changing environment.

We run innovative digital projects that help to grow more sustainable and resilient communities. We know we are making powerful, positive changes because we track our on-the-ground impact using cutting-edge digital mapping technologies.

Our business and research partnerships draw together like-minded leaders and their companies and research institutions towards our vision of a more resilient Australia.

Green Cross Australia are proud members of an international network with a distinctive history. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mikhail Gorbachev became deeply engaged with the Rio Earth Summit. In1993 Gorbachev founded Green Cross International in order to create a new approach to solving the world's most pressing environmental challenges by reconnecting humanity to the environment.

Over 30 Green Cross offices around the world work towards this vision.

We are not an advocacy group. We work alongside respected business, research, community and government partners to deliver world-class digital values and behaviour changing projects. We strive for a secure and sustainable future.

Think + Act + Share = Change' is key to every project we deliver.

We think that every Australian wants to work towards a positive future, but are turned off by the politics, the arguments, the scare tactics, or the complicated science. We don't need to be paralysed just because we are polarised about climate change.

CSIRO research shows that 88% of Australians believe that climate change is happening. While 46.5% of them believe that humans are significantly contributing to it, 42.2% believe it's just a natural fluctuation in earth's temperatures. Whatever our belief, Australians know we need to prepare for a very different 21st century.

Our History

In 1989 USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev addressed the Global Forum for the Survival of Humanity and proposed the formation of an organisation which would apply the medical emergency response model of Red Cross International to ecological issues and expedite solutions to environmental problems that transcend national boundaries.

Green Cross International (GCI) was formally launched in Kyoto, on 18 April 1993 with many renowned personalities on its Board of Directors and Honorary Board.

Green Cross International sought to establish national affiliates, which would enjoy autonomy in conducting their own projects but would also participate in at least one international programme. Green Cross is now represented in 30 countries around the world.

At Brisbane Festival's Earth Dialogues in July 2006, Mikhail Gorbachev and Alexander Likhotal, President and CEO of Green Cross International, signed an agreement with then Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and Lord Mayor Campbell Newman to establish a Green Cross in Brisbane.

Green Cross Australia was launched on 14 June 2007 in Brisbane with the vision of reconnecting humanity and the environment.

"Australia is a key country for GCI: Green Cross Australia will lead the call to action across this vast, diverse land and reinvigorate citizens in the quest for a sustainable and peaceful future for the Pacific region.
Australia is a beacon of democracy and stability, but at the same time a nation with highly consumptive habits which emit more carbon dioxide per person than any other country apart from the United States.
The potential for Green Cross Australia to forge partnerships needed to activate concrete change is clear."
Mikhail Gorbachev, June 14, 2007.
