Description

The Environment Council of Central Queensland is a new regional organisation that aims to work closely with existing groups in the area to protect environmental values including the climate and the Great Barrier Reef.

Our area extends from the city of Mackay and north to Bowen, south to St. Lawrence, west to the Queensland border and East to the territorial limits of the Commonwealth of Australia including the islands, the ocean and ocean floor and the Great Barrier Reef.

We are part of the network of regional conservation organisations in Queensland that have been working for decades to protect the natural environment and the natural systems on which we all depend.

About Central Queensland

Central Queensland is a place of natural beauty and biodiversity, from the brigalow scrub out West to the diversity and complexity of the Great Barrier Reef to the East. Central Queensland also home to one of the biggest coal and gas export areas in the world. The last few years have seen an explosion of coal expansion, new proposed coal mines and massive new approved coal seam gas areas in our area.

And with our cycle of dry and wet, the hotness of our summers and the fragility of our ecosystems, Central Queensland is also at the front line of our changing climate. As average global temperatures increase, we can expect deeper and longer droughts, more intense cyclones, heatwaves and floods. We can expect disruptions to our understanding of the seasons, which impacts food and water systems.

How we work

Governments are charged with looking after the environment, but too frequently fail in their obligations to do so. Even though we all rely on the natural environment for our food, water and air, government will often prioritise private interests over communities, the natural world and future generations.

We believe that empowered communities are crucial to environmental protection. Only by concerned citizens finding their voice and taking action together do we have a chance of dealing with the environmental crisis that face us. Our problems are serious, but in solving them, we will create a better world.

ECoCeQ wants to assist individuals and local groups in Central Queensland to take up environmental issues. If you are in our area and would like to start your own local environment group, please get in touch.

We know that natural places and habitat will be sacrificed to make way for these projects. But they will also impact on our surface and groundwater resources, on air quality and local sustainability. The massive expansion of fossil fuels also impacts on our global climate through increased greenhouse gas emissions.
