Description

Our mission is to create a more liveable Wallan by engaging the community in restoring, enhancing & preserving the natural environment.

Resulting in abundant & significant networks of native flora, fauna & passive recreation areas that the community appreciates and values.

Wallan Environment Group was called the Friends of Wallan Creek until April 2010. The group's original goal was to restore and enhance the environmental values of Wallan Creek, a tributary of Merri Creek, as it flows through the town of Wallan, north of Melbourne.

Accordingly, Wallan Environment Group's initial focus was on weed removal, revegetation, and mulching work along Wallan Creek in Wallan Community Park, the reserve behind Wallan Scout Hall (along Watson Street). The extensive revegetation work that the group has undertaken in the park has involved the use of plants that are indigenous to the local area. While most of our activities are still held in the reserve, the group has now enlarged its goals to cover the natural environment in and around Wallan. The photos show the huge improvement along Wallan Creek from the first planting, with Wallan Primary School, in November 2003 to November 2014.

Wallan Creek from the same viewpoint as above in November 2014Wallan Environment Group organises at least one working day per month. These working days are normally held on the Sunday after the Wallan Market from 10am-1pm. We hope that you can make it to one of the Group’s working days. The work undertaken on these days aims to beautify the local area, create habitat for local animals and birds, and improve the environmental values of Wallan Creek. The working days are also an opportunity to meet other like-minded people from your local community. Everyone is welcome. Bring your family and friends along, and enjoy the free BBQ lunch provided for all volunteers once the work is complete for the day.

History of group

2003:
Community members in Wallan began the reclamation of Wallan Creek, which led to the formation in 2004 of Friends of Wallan Creek.

2004 – 2007:
After incorporation, Friends of Wallan Creek applied for and obtained a series of grants (more than $100,000) to improve the environmental values of Wallan Creek. This money and literally thousands of hours of voluntary labour provided by the local community, including 1st Wallan Wallan Scouts, Upper Maribyrnong Catchment Group and local schools, over many years has provided a truly local focus on improving Wallan’s natural environment. The result has been the transformation of Wallan Community Park and Wallan Creek from a weed and rubbish infested waterway into one of the few truly open spaces in Wallan which the whole community should be justly proud.

2007 – June 2010:
Friends of Wallan Creek began to expand its geographical focus to include the care of Taylors Creek and commenced lobbying Mitchell Shire to open up and develop Green Hill, Wallan, as public open space.

2010:
Wallan Environment Group is formed on 5 June 2010, ie World Environment Day, after Friends of Wallan Creek changed its name. The change in the group’s name was made to reflect the group’s shift to a broader geographical focus and its growing role as an advocate for the improvement, protection, extension and linking of the local parks, reserves and public open space areas in Wallan. The group’s overall aim is to create a more liveable Wallan by engaging the community in restoring, enhancing and preserving the natural environment.

2014:
Wallan Environment Group celebrated it's ten year anniversary since starting out as Friends of Wallan Creek in 2004. See the President's Report for the activities of the group and our Strategic Plan.
