Description

Sea Shepherd Australia is a non-profit conservation organisation whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

Sea Shepherd Australia uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced oceanic ecosystems, Sea Shepherd Australia works to ensure their survival for future generations.

The sinking of the F/V Thunder (pictured during the longest ever maritime chase from Sea Shepherd in history) in West Africa started a new era in Sea Shepherd: signifying new co-operations and strengthening existing relations with government bodies worldwide, enabling us to be much more effective against the biggest threat facing the oceans today, IUU fishing.

Since then, Gabon, Liberia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Tanzania, and Timor-Leste have welcomed our efforts in their territorial waters, leading to dozens of arrests and millions of lives saved. (Credit: Simon Ager / Sea Shepherd).

History of group

Sea Shepherd was founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson in Vancouver, Canada, with the mission to protect and conserve all marine wildlife. Incorporated in Oregon in 1981 as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, today the movement has independent entities in over 20 countries working together on direct-action campaigns around the world. In 2013 Sea Shepherd Global was established in Amsterdam to coordinate communications and logistics for the Sea Shepherd fleet on campaigns outside the USA.
